LO1:Understand how sound elements are used across media industries

Below are links to various media products that demonstrate the use of sound needed for analysis for U16 Lo1, feel free to find your own:

JURRASIC PARK (1993)

In this clip the use of music is featured at the beginning the sound of the music is very peaceful and to
match the fantasy/ utopia setting. Before the music was featured the helicopter sound was featured to match the feature of the helicopter in the film. The fantasy music was used through out the clip. However, the music becomes less loud, whilst the characters of the film are talking. The music is still featured as the positive mood stays constant.

The target audience for this film is families, which means is specifically targeted at a younger audience. This is also the reasoning behind the use of exciting oud music.
At 2.20 the sound is changed for a couple seconds as the change of scene went from positive to negative. The music changes into a dramatic intense sounds while the sound effects of  the cage gates closing and locking. The music then repeats is positive adventure sound in the movie. At 3:09 the sound of
the car is featured to match its cars stopping visuals you can hear the cars tiered screeching and moving.

At 3.17 in the clip the music stops playing while the sound effects of nature is playing in the background such as birds, grass hoppers etc. The music suddenly stops as the scene becomes dramatic.
The dramatic background music gently reappears matching the characters feeling and movement.

The clip included a dinosaur roar as the scene featured the appearance of the first dinosaur. Also, there was heavy foot steps sounds matching the movement of the dinosaur . This made the dinosaur much more realistic. Again, to match the dinosaurs movement and make it much more realistic the sound of trees moving as the dinosaur walk past was featured. This is clear from 3.55. The positive music used from the beginning was also brought back.

From 4.45 the music immediately became louder as the dinosaur was on 4 feet.
And at 4.58 the voice of the characters is played over the dinosaur sound and music. This is because what the character is saying is more important at this point.

The famous Jurassic music that was featured through out the clip is featured again at the end as all of the dinosaurs were presented along with the nature and animals sound effects, which helped and complimented with setting the scenery.
The beginning of the game includes its opening theme music which is designed to match the visual text it is very futuristic and has machinery sound in it. This is generally a common convention in computer/video beginning audio.

The game also includes sound features when you click on a button The sound effect is a very high technical- sci-fi sort of sound, which also appears when users are navigating  and selecting.

At 0.50 of the clip the game includes  a voice over/ narration. This is a voice is of a male voice and of a dark/sinister tone to suit its genre.

After the narration the game begins and sounds are used to present the setting of the game. Sound effects used for this were sound effects such as growling, the bashing of chains and heavy breathing. These intense sounds were featured to ensure the user feels connected, really part of the game and as if he was there. Intense, dark and dramatic music is played through out this game as it contributes in creating the mood. At 1.27 the game starts to feature shooting and sound effect used to match these visuals were loud futuristic laser sounds.

At around 1.36 the character starts to refill his weapon and mechanical, metallic noises were used to create this.

The music in the game has stopped playing as the character is navigating around. This causes the game to become much more intense and dramatic. Although, there isn't silence there is sill a constant technical and mechanical background noise being played.

There is a feature of a women character at 1.57. The character say in a robotic female voice "we have to continue". This is to allow the uses to understand the narrative and what need to be done. The voice is robotic due to it being suited towards is genre.

A 2.39 the sound effects used at the begging / selection stage is used in the game. It is used by the character in the game. This also allows the audience to feel as if they were part of the game from the very start.

This radio advert is targeted at children, young adults and parents. One of the way this radio advert was targeted at this audience through the use of the voice over who sounds as if he is enjoying himself on a ride at Alton Towers. The voice used sounds as if it is by a middle aged man. This is because it is usually an older audience that purchases this. However, his mode of address is quite informal due to what he is advertising being informal.

At the very beginning of the radio advert it features sounds of the track of a roller coaster, which usually excites people and presents the voice over is on a roller coaster. While the roller coaster sounds as if it is at its peak the voice over seams to scream while the ride drops. This clearly presents as if the voice over was actually on the ride. The background included many more screams from other passengers as you would normally hear on a roller coaster. This compliments the advertisement through making it much more realistic.
Again, the radio advertisement includes the voice over speaking while on the ride at Alton Towers along with screams to get the audience excited when listening to this.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ve4M4UsJQo – TV Advert

This advertisement is targeted an audience between the ages 35 to 45 and the ABC1 category. This is due to the product being advertised being a product sold toward that audience group. Also, the way Honda have used their visuals and audio is very appealing towards this audience. In this Television advert it features the parts of a dissembled car unit it reveals the assembled finished car. This was uniquely done through featuring each car part with its own unique metallic sound following the movement of each part. Also, the sound of the dissembled cars rolling on the wood is featured in this advert. This make the sound in the advertisement very real and neat. The pace of the sound varies as it depends on the movement of the car pieces.

At 1:37 as the dashboard is switched on the advertisement includes music, which is presented at this point in the advert as if it is coming from the car's dashboard. The music that is played is very up beat and exciting. The car pieces look as if they are creating the music as the timing of the beat and the car parts are the same. This is clear form 1.39.

The advertisement features a voice over at 1.49. The voice over says " Isn't it nice when things just... work". The voice sounds as if it is a middle aged man. I think this fits with its advertisement due to the target audience being the same. However, although it is targeted at an ABC1 category the voice over is quite informal and is speaking at a peer to peer mode of address directly at the audience. This fits the overall mood the advertisement has created, which is quite funny and light hearted. Also, the voice over was featured while the music of the 'car pieces' were playing.

The Honda advertisement features the music of a remixed popular song. This was featured towards the end of the advertisement as soon as the voice over stopped talking. The music used was great and suitable for it target audience. It also added cool elements to the advertisement.

The documentary immediately includes a narration with peaceful sound effects used when portraying is calm, isolated and relaxing location. The narration is quite formal, however, the accent and tone is not as formal and much  more casual then the dialect.

'Guy' begins to speak - The audio of Guy speaking is also feature on top of the suspenseful music. While the audio/ Guy's voice is much louder the music is much quite making the audio from guy much more clear an uninterrupted.

Intense music is used when the car is presented in the documentary the music compliments the documentaries aim to present a fierce vehicle. The intense music is also feature as the car takes off and when the team is assembling it. The dramatic music suits the documentaries target audience as it gives the audience suspense and a much more exciting film.

As the race car takes off the sound effect of the speed is noticeable as it is the main thing you can here. The speed sound effect's volume varies whether the camera and vehicle is.

The documentary also includes and features the sound of the equipment in the documentary. This was probably featured as it is a documentary and its purpose it to present what is actually going on.

As the documentary is presenting 'the world's fastest car' it is giving its audience the audience a clear presentation through also the narration which is a clear description of the product and everything going on. The interviews featured with the specialist also give the audience a clear understanding of the documentary. The interviews are featured in-between the presentation of the worlds fastest car making the audio vary from a much calmer interview style to loud mechanical sound, which has made the documentary much more exciting and full of suspense.
